Here's a genuine piece of music history - Miriam Makeba's self-titled debut on RCA Victor from 1960, marking the South African vocalist's first major American label release. This album introduced Western audiences to Makeba's extraordinary vocal range and her ability to seamlessly blend traditional African folk songs with jazz and soul influences. Known as "Mama Africa," Makeba had already gained international recognition through her appearances in the anti-apartheid documentary "Come Back, Africa" and her collaborations with Harry Belafonte, who helped secure this RCA deal. The album features her stunning interpretations of songs sung in Xhosa, Zulu, and English, including early versions of tracks that would become signature pieces throughout her career.
